VAFA launches 2017 women's league

The VAFA officially announced on Thursday that it will commence a women’s league in 2017. The decision was announced after a period of months garnering interest from VAFA clubs about fielding sides in a women’s competition.

Old Geelong Football Club was one of a number of clubs who submitted an expression of interest and we have been given the go ahead to build a team to compete next year. Libby Graham (sister of John and Harry, and cousin of Ollie Graham and Rupert and Joe Kemp) represented the OGs at the official launch event at Sportscover Arena last week, joining 17 other girls from various VAFA clubs.

The league will initially be a development league focussed on participation and learning of the game. There will be some slight modifications initially to accommodate those new to playing the game competitively.

The launch of the VAFA women’s league comes off the back of the AFL’s announcement of their national women’s league involving eight AFL clubs that will begin next year.
